HELLO SUMMER!

Posted by Margareta Vukas on

Summer is here! We all enjoy being outdoors, playing in the park, or traveling around. Whether in the city or out by the beach or in the countryside, for responsible pet owners, welfare and protection of their pets are high priorities.

Here are some tips and preventive measures for a safe and happy summertime.

-Do not spend lots of time outside during the days with high heat and humidity. PREVENT YOUR PET FROM OVERHEATING. Provide your pet with fresh water and shade. Especially sensitive to the heat are Brachycephalic dogs (Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boxers).

-NEVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A CAR. Even if windows are open, the interior temperature can rise in as little as 6 minutes and can cause serious health issues. Heat stroke symptoms are: panting, excessive drooling, dehydration, increased body temperature above 39C/103F, reddened gums, fast and irregular heartbeat... In this situation move your pet to a cool place, drape a damp towel over the body and get your pet to the vet as soon as possible.

-ENDO AND ECTO PARASITES ARE MORE PREVALENT DURING THE SUMMERTIME. Make sure your pets get tested for heartworm if they are not on preventive control. Fleas, Ticks, Roundworms, Tapeworms are the most common parasites in the warmer months. One option is all natural solutions:

 - Summer is BBQ season. Very often dogs love to play and eat charcoal briquettes. If the dog eats charcoal (depends on the amount and whether it's plain or treated), it may cause gastrointestinal upset and other effects on the kidneys and pancreas.

-Avoid DAYLILIES, ASIATIC, EASTER or STARGAZER LILIES from your yard, especially if you have a cat. AZALEAS are a flowering shrub that contains neurotoxins that are very dangerous for dogs and cats if ingested.

-Be careful with PESTICIDES, HERBICIDES, FUNGICIDES and all those types of chemicals. Exposure to them increases the pet's health risk.

Besides that, boost up your pet's immunity during summer time. Strong immunity is the best protector against allergies and the most health issues. The use of PROBIOTICS or the OMEGA 3 FISH OIL would be well advised:

Keep your pets cool and safe and enjoy the summer!
